Waste Heat Recovery based steam and power generation

January 3rd, 2009

Name of Project Waste Heat Recovery based steam and power generation in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand by Tata Steel Ltd.

Location of the project (village / District / State) Jamshedpur, Jharkhand

Brief Description of the project The integrated steel plant of TSL generates gases such as Blast Furnace Gas (BFG), Coke Oven Gas (COG), and Basic Oxygen Furnace Gas (BOFG) in its operating units. A part of this gas is being utilized for steam generation in the existing boilers with coal and the remaining is flared. In this proposed project heat content in the waste gas earlier lost in the atmosphere will be utilized for steam generation and the steam generated will be utilized for the plant process and for power generation. This will be achieved by converting all the boilers in plant to 100% waste gas firing, thereby completely eliminating the coal consumption and corresponding CO2 emissions. The system uses advance gas burners to ensure the uniformity of heating. The new (combined heat and power) system is designed as an energy efficient regenerative cycle.

January 2nd, 2009

Name of Project Efficiency improvement of blow heat recovery system at Bhadrachalam PSPD unit by ITC Ltd

Location of the project (village / District / State) Bhadrachalam

Brief Description of the project The purpose of the project activity is to upgrade the design of existing blow heat recovery system at the pulp digester mill to recover additional flash steam available at the disposal and increase the efficiency of heat exchange between flash steam and fresh water. The project involves retrofitting the existing BHRS to recover 100% flash steam during the pulp blow down period from the digester and efficiently transfer the heat of the flash steam to the fresh water to increase its temperature by 70C. After implementation of all the measures adopted in the BHRS, it was observed that the specific steam consumption fro production of one ton of hot water has reduced from 0.0482 ton of steam to 0.0063 ton of steam, lead with GHG reduction.
