Reduction in GHGs emission from primary aluminium smelter at Hindalco, Hirakud India

Description of the project activity:

Producers of primary aluminium with facilities located across the country. HINDALCO smelters are located at Hirakud, Orissa, with a captive power plant (coal based) and coal mines. In 2004, Hindalco decided to convert the existing Soderberg potlines to Pre-bake technology. The primary aim of the project is to reduce the PFCs (Perfluorocarbon gases, both Perfluromethane (CF4) and Perfluroethane (C2F6)) emissions which occur during anode effect at the smelters. The project activity includes “conversion of the existing HSS technology (maximum line current of 62 kA) to Point Fed Prebake (PFPB) technology and operating at a line current of 85kA. . With this change in smelting technology that requires continuous feeding of alumina through a centre crust and increase of line current, the project activity will augment production capacity from 100,000 tonnes per annum (installed capacity at line current of 62 kA) to 146,000 tonnes per annum (maximum production capacity at 85 kA) without introduction of new pot lines.

This is considered an expansion of aluminium production capacity which is incidental to change in technology that will not only reduce PFCs emissions from anode effect at the smelter but also reduce electrical energy consumption during electrolysis process at the smelter. This project has been undertaken in the context of Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol. The emission reduction is expected from:

a) Conversion of technology leading to reduction in PFCs (Perfluorocarbon gases, both Perfluromethane (CF4) and Perfluroethane (C2F6)) emission from anode effect mitigation and;

b) Improvement in electrical energy efficiency leading to reduction in specific electricity energy consumption and hence equivalent carbon-dioxide emission reduction from the sources of power generation.

The project would also lead to emission due to transportation of the prebaked anode to the project site. This has been considered as leakage effect.
