Installation of Bundled Composting Project in the state of Tamil Nadu

Description of the project activity:
The objective of the project is the establishment of six compost plants for treating municipal solid waste located in six different municipalities in the state of Tamil Nadu. The project involves adopting method for aerobic decomposition of biodegradable component of municipal solid waste. The compost plants would have an aggregated capacity of 545 tonnes of waste per day: 190.75 Kilotons of waste/year. These plants are disseminated near Coimbatore and Trichy located in the state of Tamil Nadu in the following towns:
1. Coonoor: 20 TPD 2. Udumalpet: 20 TPD
3. Mettupalayam: 35 TPD 4. Erode: 100 TPD
5. Trichy: 300 TPD 6. Pollachi: 70 TPD
Purpose of the Project Activity
Scenario Existing Prior to Start of the Implementation of the Project Activity Currently, the local body of each municipality collects the municipal solid waste and disposes it in the existing Solid Waste Disposal Site (SWDS) managed by respective municipalities. The open disposal causes a number of environmental and health hazards including unabated release of methane in the atmosphere.
