Avoidance of HFC-134a emissions in rigid Poly Urethane Foam (PUF) manufacturing by Acme Tele Power Limited (ATPL)

Description of the small-scale project activity:
ATPL has installed a Greenfield project for the manufacturing of rigid PUF (Poly Urethane Foam) panels. Rigid PUF manufacturing makes use of a blowing agent in the manufacturing process. This blowing agent serves the purpose of reducing the viscosity of the other raw materials being used in the manufacturing and also gets entrapped in the closed cells of the foam and acts as an insulating agent. Some amount of blowing agent gets released at the time of manufacturing, during usage and ultimately at the time of decommissioning / disposal of the PUF. In the past decade, the polyurethane foam industry has experienced dramatic changes due to regulations involving CFCs and HCFCs used as foam blowing agents. The Montreal Protocol and its subsequent amendments create a schedule to phase out the uses of ozone depletion substances (ODSs) by substance classes (CFCs, HCFCs, etc.). The substitute chemicals developed to be used as alternate blowing agents include HFCs (like HFC-134a, HFC-245fa, HFC-365mfc and HFC-152a) and Hydrocarbons (cyclopentane, iso-pentane, n-pentane etc.).
ATPL is putting up a large scale continuous PUF panel manufacturing facility, HFC-134a and Pentane were the most economical and commercially available options as blowing agents compared to the other
HFCs like HFC-245fa and 365mfc1. HFC-152a is not used in the foam blowing industry for manufacture of continuous PUF panels2. Pentane being inflammable in nature requires substantial additional investment to ensure safer operations. Inspite of this, ATPL opted for Pentane as the blowing agent thereby avoiding the GHG emissions, which would have occurred if HFC-134a had been used as the blowing agent instead.
