Zenith Birla is planning to set up a new manufacturing facility for SAW pipes. The project involves setting up a greenfield plant with a capacity of 2 lakh tpa in the western coast , close to a port. The proposed plant will make SAW pipelines with diameter up to 24 inches, which finds application in for oil and gas distribution through cross-country pipelines. As of December 2007, the company is looking for land - about 30-40 acres - in Maharashtra and Gujarat and has already started negotiations with equipment suppliers. Construction work is expected to commence in six months. The Rs.2500-3,000 million project is scheduled to go on stream in 2009.
